About Our Farm

Our story begins in 2000 when Carolyn and I bought our 15 acres of paradise in Liberty, New Jersey.  We wanted to try our hand at farming. We needed space, clean air, clean water and the sounds of the country for our children.  Carolyn wanted to be a shepherd from the beginning.  My family has farmed the area where we now live for about 100 years.  Carolyn investigated different types of sheep for a long time trying to find one that would thrive on our terrain.  She fell in love the moment she saw her first Icelandic. Their fleece is breathtaking and great for spinners or fiber artists. They are very hearty under most conditions and the array of colors in the fleece is astounding.  Most of all they have great mothering instincts.

The Icelandic sheep came originally to Canada from Iceland by way of Stefania Sveinbjarnardottir.  She went through a terrible ordeal to get the sheep into Canada.  Stefania brought 10 ewes and 2 rams which are foundation for all the flocks in the United States. Carolyn had the great honor of meeting her. Icelandic sheep date back to between 874 AD and 903AD.  They were brought to Iceland by the Vikings from Norway.  They are one of the most pure breeds of sheep in the world.

My foundation flock is a mixture of sheep bought from Elaine Clark, Barbara Webb and Susan Mongold.  All of these women are part of the foundation for all the Icelandics in the United States.  Barbara Webb was the first shepherd in the U.S. to have Icelandic sheep.

The sheep thrive on our farm.  Their temperament is extraordinarily good.  Our sheep will potentially improve your flock.  We have outstanding genetics.  The farm has been on television in Iceland.  In 2005 a television news crew from Iceland came here and did a news segment on raising Icelandics in the United States. It was a very exciting time for all of us.

For those of you who do not have a flock yet, but are interested in raising sheep, we have wonderful starter flock packages.  Every starter flock is designed custom to your needs and wants.  There is a 10% discount for up to three sheep purchased and a  20 % discount on four or more sheep purchased.  Every lamb is a surprise.  You can’t believe the colors and patterns that show up in each one.  Mature ewes and rams are also available. I am here at all times to help each new shepherd through any questions they may have.  This help was given to me as I learned and I love offering the help to new flock owners.

This is a small farm operation.  All sheep are handled twice each day,and constantly observed for health & injury.  All feedings, wormings, inspections, and shearings are completed in a low stress enviroment. This has made our sheep extremely friendy and easy to handle. Almost all respond by name  One local farmer devotes several fields of weed free pure orchard grass for the over one thousand bales we use each year in addition to ample grazing from our pastures.  Our sheep are able to 'free range' from pastures to barn and are guarded by Great Pyreenes dogs.

We have achieved 'Certified Status' from the USDA in the Scrapie Flock Program.(NJ5514)
